Christian Artists of every discipline living in step with a Christian Worldview
Akoúō - Hear and understand
Akoúō is Greek and means to hear and consider what is being said. To learn. To give ear to a teaching or a teacher.
***
We believe in the triune God of the Bible and look to its teachings as the very Word of God Himself.
We desire to listen to Him,
learn from His Word, and
promote what is true, good, and beautiful.
Rise - Rise up and take action
The word of God instructs believers in Christ to not be hearers only, but people who actively live out the Word with Jesus as their anchor.
(James 1:22-25)
"A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God, not just as tracts, mind you, but as things of beauty to the praise of God. An art work can be a doxology in itself." -Francis Schaeffer.
Akoúō Rise (A.R.) seeks to equip Christian artists of all disciplines to live in step with a Christian Worldview, and confidently use their artistic talents to influence this cultural moment.
***
Akoúō Rise desires to cultivate the hearts and minds of artists in order to instill in them a deeper understanding of their identity in Christ and the larger narrative in which we live.
Learners are encouraged to engage ideas surrounding faith and culture, as well as, how the ideas interact.
As learners engage these big ideas, they will develop a broader awareness of
"Christian art is the expression of the whole life of the whole person as a Christian. What a Christian portrays in his art is the totality of life. Art is not to be solely a vehicle for some sort of self-conscious evangelism."
- Francis Schaeffer

"The human heart continues to express a longing for meaning, for hope, for a story that can make sense of all of this... In Ecclesiastes 3:11 the writer says that God has put eternity in our hearts. We long to connect [with] that. The soul is looking for ways to connect with that and it shows up again and again and again in the stories that [people] tell." -Mike Cosper
***
"Art for God's sake -- this is what the tabernacle was all about. Every detail in that sacred building was for the praise of God's glory."
- Philip Graham Ryken

Akoúō Rise is a safe place for artists of all disciplines to express creativity, as well as, anyone interested in thinking more deeply about beauty and creative content.
The concept coined by artist Makoto Fugimura, "culture care" brings focus and clarity. In the midst of brokenness and injustice we affirm beauty and work to make the culture reflect it. Justice is grounded in beauty. "An encounter with beauty shows us what could be and can make us rightly dissatisfied with the way things are. ... A culture care approach will encourage truth-telling about alienation, suffering, and oppression along side truth-telling about justice, hope, and restoration." - Makoto Fugimura, Culture Care
AR believes God is the first artist. All of what we see is a reflection of the skilled and thoughtful artist who made everything, ultimately pointing back to Him. Anything we create orders, in a new way, what God has given us.
Beauty is a reminder that there is hope and that disorder and brokenness will one day be no longer. Creation care is a part of being a responsible steward of what has been given by the Creator.
The human soul experiences brokenness and trauma. Beauty is a large part of soul care. Beauty heals and restores. Beauty fosters depth in relationship and is at the heart of redemptive stories. AR wants to open the eyes of artists to the Creator in order that they create and release what Makoto Fugimura names "generative works" that awaken the soul to reconciliation and healing, and ultimately help draw us into relationship with the One who made us.
Grace and Peace!
